About Lamu Old Town
Lamu Old Town is East Africa's oldest living town and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its well-preserved Swahili architecture, narrow winding streets, and a pace of life that has changed little in centuries.
With no cars allowed, Lamu moves at the speed of donkeys and dhows. Ornate carved doors, coral-stone buildings, and vibrant mosques tell the story of centuries of Swahili, Arab, and Indian Ocean trade culture.
Highlights
- UNESCO-listed Swahili architecture
- Dhow sailing and traditional boat building
- Lamu Museum and Fort
- Donkey sanctuary and island life
- Lamu Cultural Festival (November)
